COMPETITIONS

At Annual Displays of Quilling & AGMs, and at Festivals, there is a chance for you to enter quillings you made during the last year into several competitions. The different competition subjects allow for a range of interests and challenges, and give beginners, as well as experienced quillers, the chance to join in and, maybe, surprise yourselves. Members may enter competitions free of charge.

This year, we will accept entries to competitions from non-members, too. Non-members should apply through and be known to a Regional Rep, maybe as a result of a Guild workshop, and will be charged £5 per entry towards Guild expenses. Only members of the Guild may take part in voting for entries.

Here are the competition rules, so that the requirements for each category are clear. Any feedback would be appreciated for future years.

Voting - On the day, each member attending the AGM is entitled to vote once for the quilling they admire most in each category. As you move around with your coloured voting slips, you should bear in mind what the entrant needed to have done to meet the criteria, the precision, design and flair shown in the work, and what you, personally, appreciate in the quilling, and then cast your vote. We make every effort to keep the identities of each entrant a secret until the voting is over, and the awards can be made. This method of voting has proved to be very fair, which is a credit to the good and careful judgement of the voters (you!).

The Silver Salver and Rose Bowl have been donated by individuals to be presented to the artists whose quillings are judged according to the separate criteria required. You cannot enter a competition for these awards. They are a recognition of work that may not fall into an agreed category but is pleasing to the committee members or invited guests who choose them. They're a discretionary 'pat on the back' and may not necessarily be awarded annually.

COMPETITION RULES:       Printable copy of  Competition Rules

1a.   All entries must be original and must have been made since the last Annual Display of Quilling/AGM.
1b.   Please do not enter more than one piece per person, per category.

2.   Each entry must be made entirely from quilled paper strips and glue, using the techniques currently recognised by the Guild as quilling, which can be found in the Members' Handbook (for exceptions, see the categories). Please write to the secretary, enclosing an A5 stamped, addressed envelope, if you would like an up to date copy.

These are the categories:   Those winning a category the previous year, are asked not to enter that category the following year. (This does not apply to the Masters’ Category.)

3.   Beginners - for those who started quilling since the last Display of Quilling/AGM. The entry may include some 'Quilling Plus' items. You may also choose to enter other categories this year, such as ‘Never Placed in a Competition’.

4.   Greetings Card - The theme for the Greetings Card for 2010 is "A New Home". The maximum card size is 8.5" x 6.5" (216mm x 165mm) front face; quilled design only - no printing, peel-offs or written lettering, etc. allowed. Entries with a musical theme will also be eligible. Remember, only one entry per member, please.

5.   Quilling Plus - this category allows you to complement your quilling with other materials or techniques. These should, however, be kept to a minimum (as a guideline, embellishments should represent less than 10% of the entry).

6.   Free Standing - this must be completely self-supporting; to be quilled entirely from paper, glue and card; must not be attached to a base which is not quilled; may be placed on a base for display enhancement.

7.   Quilling in a Frame - Rule 2, above, applies, but the frame does not, necessarily, have to be quilled. The overall dimension of the frame is NOT to exceed 60” (152.4cm) all around its edge; e.g., 15" x 15" (381mm x 381mm) would qualify, as would 18" x 12" (457mm x 305mm).

8.   Quilled Box - Rule 2 applies to the decoration of the box, but the box, itself, can be of any suitable material - it is the quilling which is being judged. You must demonstrate at least three different quilling techniques. (Not all surfaces need to be quilled.)   Minimum size: 5" x 3" x 3" (127mm x 76mm x 76mm)   Maximum size: 12" x 12" x 12" (300mm x 300mm x 300mm).

9.   Quilling on ..... - this category allows entries to be mounted on different materials, such as wood, eggs, polystyrene, etc. However, the quilling should conform with Rule 2.

10.   Never Placed in a Competition (i.e. 1st, 2nd or 3rd) - a category for members who have never had success in a Guild quilling competition before or who are relative beginners.

11.   'Masters' Category - this is a category for the more experienced quillers, for Fellows (quilling), for anyone who has had a quilling book published, for anyone who won a first prize in the previous year's competition in any category, (excluding 'Beginners' and 'Never Placed') and also for anyone who likes a challenge. Quillings may be entered for this category by any member, including last year’s winners. Fellows (non-quilling) may enter other categories.

12.   Your individual entry number, as supplied by the Competitions Secretary (see Committee page), must be attached to each piece.

13.   A typed explanatory note may accompany your work, if you feel this would clarify your interpretation of the subject.

14.   Your name, or other distinguishing marks, must not appear on any piece.

15.   NB. Pieces must meet the above criteria, or they will be disqualified.

Junior Competition - there are three age categories: under 10 years - 10 years to 14 years - 15 years to 18 years. All the above rules apply, including rules regarding sizes of cards, boxes and frames.

Regional Displays - the display should be interesting and inspirational, and be a good interpretation of the theme (if you have one). There should be a good variety of work, showing a range of complexity, and indicating that all levels of experience have contributed.

Special, Non-competitive Awards are also made. Either of these special awards would grace any sideboard for a year, a high accolade for inspired quillers.

The Rose Bowl -   is given for an interesting or unusual quilling not entered into any competition. Rules 1a and 2, above, apply.

The Salver -   is awarded for excellence in quilling in a piece of work which may or may not have been entered in a competition. Rule 1a applies. Rule 2 does not apply, although you are reminded that too many other materials will detract from the quilling.

Entries from Overseas - When posting competition entries from outside the UK and EU, please ensure that you write clearly on the parcel the following words:TEMPORARY IMPORT. This will avoid your being charged customs duty, both in the UK and in your country.

We hope that this information will help to ensure that all Quilling entered in the Annual Competitions meets the Quilling Guild's Requirements. We would be as unhappy as you, if we had to disqualify entries which do not comply with them.
So get quilling and enter as many competitions as you can - spread your chances of success - but do read the rules carefully to make sure you don't fall at the first hurdle.
